There are not enough stars to express my thoughts and feelings about all of the staff at Sunnybrook. There are so many people from those who directly served my ‘loved one’ to the numerous people that I will never know that were involved in creating a place where my loved one felt respected and cared for with outmost dignity. When our family was faced with finding a place for our loved one to live it was incredibly heartbreaking. After some our visits in our search I remember just crying in the parking lot. Not about the staff that worked in these facilities but rather the conditions of the buildings and how little the staff have to work with to serve the people who live there. It felt at times an atmosphere of the ‘living dead’.
When we came to Sunnybrook with its gardens, large open visiting areas and a variety of places that residents can spend time in with their families it felt like residents had an opportunity to actually live.
Our loved one who was a retired Canadian Navy person lived their final years in a facility that allowed them to participate in life. In their case they were a part of several interviews with students( sharing their time in the military )and promoting the facility. They also went to a Blue Jays Game and went on bus trips to explore Toronto. My family could spend time there to enjoy food, drink, exploring and playing cribbage. They spent an afternoon playing with their great grandchild and petting time with their dog. There are opportunities to have other experiences depending on your loved ones interests.
The staff not only provided outstanding personal care but presented themselves in such a way that allowed them to joke and cater their interactions specific to the resident themselves. Our loved one referred to Sunnybrook as their ‘HOME’. On another note, personally the staff provided priceless support as a family member to help us navigate this part of life, our feelings and how we could too provide our support for our loved one.
If all Long-Term Care facilities were closer to what Sunnybrook could provide my family would have had fewer tears in parking lot.
My Dad is very fortunate to be living at Sunnybrook veterans centre. The qualified staff of nurses and care team really understand the patients needs and how to make them comfortable and feel respected. The dedicated doctors, wellness staff, physiotherapist, dentists, hearing professionals and activity staff are amazing g. In addition to health care there are a multitude of other stimulating activities for the veterans to participate in and enjoy.
The facility is well cared for, well designed and has an amazing garden and other green spaces to enjoy. Families of veterans are kept well informed and staff provide advice and services to assist families in making their loved one content. I commend all who are involved in the care, well being, support and general day to day operations at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre
It’s wonderful to see how well our heroes are well taken care of and how well they’re treated in this place. We owe these guys our deepest gratitude for the supreme sacrifice they made for our freedom. Lest We Forget!
