Her level of education and expertise speaks volumes—she holds degrees from the University of Toronto, Harvard, and Tufts, which really shows in the quality of care she provides. But beyond her impressive credentials, she’s also kind, professional, and deeply committed to her patients.

I first saw Dr. Shum when I was around 12. At the time, I was nervous about getting braces, and I put it off for a while. But thanks to a thoughtful referral from my pediatric dentist, Dr. Teresa Berger, I eventually started treatment with Dr. Shum. I’m so glad I did. She made me feel comfortable from day one and always explained everything clearly, which helped ease any anxiety I had. My treatment lasted about two years, and I had my braces removed when I was around 15. Now, at nearly 21, I’m still incredibly grateful for the care I received.

My case was a bit more complex—I had an underbite that was considered a surgical case. My parents chose not to go forward with surgery, and even without it, Dr. Shum achieved incredible results. My teeth went from being crooked and misaligned to straight and functional, and I’ve received many compliments on my smile over the years. It may not be 100% “perfect,” but it’s more than perfect enough for me—and all done without surgery.

I’ve seen some people comment on the cost of treatment, and I want to share my experience. My family is not wealthy, but we made the decision to invest in my dental health. Orthodontic care is never cheap, but it’s also not one-size-fits-all. The cost reflected the complexity of my case, the customized care plan, the high-quality materials, and the long-term follow-up. In my opinion, it was absolutely worth it.

One example that stands out: after I finished treatment, my bonded retainer once popped out and made eating uncomfortable. I reached out to the office, and Dr. Shum had it fixed quickly—and at no extra cost. That kind of follow-up care really shows how much she values her patients even after the braces are off.

Her entire team deserves recognition too. Her assistants are always friendly and professional, and Joanne at the front desk is so sweet and welcoming. They’re always happy to help with scheduling, insurance, or just making you feel at ease when you walk in. The atmosphere at Smile Orthodontics is warm and positive, and I always felt genuinely cared for.

Dr. Shum is a very professional orthodontist. My son's treatment is not a complicated one. Dr. Shum is honest and tells us upfront during the consultation that treatment is optional.
